3 Wheeler Invasion

gilera fuocoThree wheel moto models sure to turn heads in Sydney

Amongst hundreds of new two-wheeled motorcycles, a distinct selection of paradigm-shifting three-wheelers are sure to capture the attention of visitors to the 2008 Sydney Motorcycle Show.

Commuters seeking to take advantage of the city's refreshing new outlook and strategy on motorcycles and scooters can sample the range from iconic manufacturers including Piaggio, Gilera, BRP (Can-Am) and OZ Trikes.

Comfort, luxury, safety and stability boost the appeal of the bikes and allow the rider to maintain their own individual style.

Piaggio's MP3, available in 250cc and 400cc versions, is powered by an economic, liquid-cooled four-stroke engine, a proven performer in the city and suburbs.

Featuring an electric start button and a fully-automatic CVT transmission, the MP3 offers a new and unique level of handling with dual independent tilting front wheels able to lean to angles of up to 40 degrees.

The MP3's electro-hydraulic front suspension locking system helps to keep it upright without the use of a centrestand, and it is equally as easy to park with the use of a handbrake.

Ample storage spaces, an immobiliser and three-disc braking system make the low-emission model a logical choice for both new and experienced riders.

Gilera's Fuoco 500 is based on the same revolutionary platform as the MP3, but takes an extra step forward in terms of power output and aggressive, sporty styling.

Powered by a 492cc fuel-injected liquid-cooled four-stroke double ignition engine, the Fuoco features an unprecedented level of handling, particularly fond of tight, twisty corners.

The only one of its kind in Australia, the Ape Calessino by Vespa is sure to turn heads, with its timeless design reminiscent of the manufacturer's Italian heritage.

The three-wheeled Ape was designed to transport up to four people and goods over 60 years ago and retains its unique personality today.

It embodies the sunny, star-studded lifestyle of the Mediterranean, and has been featured in various Hollywood blockbusters from 1950 right through to present day.

BRP Australia's Can-Am Spyder Roadster made headlines when it was revealed last year, and a new, semi-automatic model is sure to capture the interest of visitors again.

The Can-Am Spyder Roadster (SE5) is the second model to join the line-up, featuring a sequential electronic 5-speed transmission, which, like the sequential manual 5-speed (SM5), includes a transmission based reverse.

Powered by a quality tested Rotax 990 V-Twin engine, both models include Dynamic Power Steering and a Vehicle Stability System engineered in conjunction with Bosch, which features anti-lock brakes, traction control and stability control systems.

Visitors to the Sydney Motorcycle Show can register to take a test ride on either model at the BRP Australia stand.

The largest Aussie manufacturer and designer of Trikes, OZ Trikes will exhibit an exciting new addition to its lineup - the fully-automatic Boom Fun 500.

The first trike to have a middle-mounted engine, the 460cc machine features a four-stroke, water-cooled engine, riding on adjustable shocks and Boom Fighter suspension for an enjoyable cruising experience.

As well as the base model, visitors can check out the Fun 500 Trend and Ultimate models with a range of optional upgrades for ultimate customisation.

The three-wheelers are just a small sample of the various motorcycle, ATV and scooter models on display at the Sydney Motorcycle Show.

The event opens on Friday November 21 and runs through until Sunday November 23.

Tickets start at $13 for children, or $44 for a family pass (two adults and two children).
